A marathon for non-resident Gujaratis (NRGs) will be organised by the state NRG department in Surat in December to improve bonding with the NRGs.

Why not? So far, only 15,000 NRGs have registered with the state government and obtained the Gujarat Card whereas hundreds of thousands of non-resident Gujaratis (NRGs) are living in other states and abroad.

Moreover, to help the NRGs with legal matters, the NRG department would provide legal guidance at NRG centres between 3 and 5 pm on second and fourth Saturdays.

The NRG Centre, affiliated to the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), organised a seminar to raise awareness about the Gujarat Card. It not only gives discounts at various business establishments but also helps in solving identity crisis, said NRI secretary Pankaj Kumar.

Kumar announced that the NRG marathon would see the participation of NRGs even from Navsari, Valsad and other places, too.

Moreover, the government has also decided to provide legal guidance to NRGs. “The NRGs face a lot of legal problems. So, legal advice will be provided at the NRG centres between 3 and 5 pm on 2nd and 4th Saturdays,” said Kumar. He added that NRGs file affidavit in good faith and get cheated later. So, the department would provide proper legal advice to buy property.

Participants at the seminar also raised issues faced by NRGs and made suggestions for issuing the NRG card. A majority of the suggestions included roping in more agencies and commercial establishments for issuing NRG cards so that a large number of cross-sections could avail of the card. Moreover, the participants also brought to notice that NRG girls were facing problem in getting the NRG card when they marry non-Gujaratis. Some people also felt that local merchants quote higher rates for NRGs.

Kumar asked more vendors to join the government and provide discounts to NRGs, which would not only give more business to them but also bring a feeling of pride to the NRGs. He also said that they would provide a certificate with a logo so that NRGs can identify shops that would give them discounts. GCCI treasurer Sanjiv Chhajer said it was a great responsibility on part of the vendors to satisfy the NRGs. “If an NRGs feels cheated, the credibility of the Gujarat Card will be at stake,” he cautioned.

KH Patel, chairman of the NRG Centre, provided information about the centre’s activity and the government’s initiatives towards NRGs.
