The clean sweep by Bharatiya Janata Party in even rural seats of Gujarat has surprised local farmer leaders. They say that inspite of overall agrarian distress and drought situation the performance of BJP is unbelievable.

Jayesh Patel, president of Khedut Samaj Gujarat is clueless as to how BJP managed to make a clean sweep in Gujarat as the results do not reflect ground situation. Increasing victory margin of BJP has also rattled him. “It seems it is more of a contest between organizational preparedness of BJP and lack of grass root workers in case of Congress. While Congress' campaign was good, there was virtual lack of booth management,” he said.

Sagar Rabari, founder president of Gujarat Khedut Ekta Samiti said that rising victory margin of BJP candidates is even more puzzling. “This means that agrarian distress, lack of jobs and other issues failed to lure rural voters,” said Rabari. Atul Patel, president for Junagadh district of Gujarat Khedut Ekta Samiti said that the victory of Rajesh Chudasma in Junagadh is puzzling as BJP volunteers were told not to enter villages while they were campaigning for polls. “There have been numerous incidents of BJP workers being refused entry in villages in our constituencies. Dalits, Patidar and farmers are not happy with the government. Villages are facing drought, farmers are not getting remunerative prices. We saw these factor decreasing BJP votes and seats in 2017 assembly polls. So it was expected that BJP would lose or at least previous victory margin should shrink. On the contrary margins have risen,” said Patel.

BJP spokesman Bharat Pandya said that as this was election for Lok Sabha, only national issues were dominant. “Moreover, voter had the confidence in the leadership of Narendra Modi. Other issues were not so relevant,” said Pandya. Political analyst and editor of Nireekshak, Prakash N Shah said that even as rural voters were facing an issue, there is no face in Congress to pull these votes. “Congress as lost its link with organizing popular agitations. It has been outsourcing these, but these are not pulling them the votes. It needs faces in the masses to connect at grass roots to get votes,” said Shah.
