Congress turncoats Alpesh Thakor and Dhavalsinh Zala were among those given tickets by the ruling BJP to contest the bypolls from the Radhanpur and Bayad seats respectively.

The saffron party has named all the candidates for the six seats that goes to polls on October 21. Jivraj Patel and Ajmal Thakor will be contesting on the party's ticket from Tharad and Kheralu while Jadish Patel and Jignesh Sevak are candidates from Amraiwadi and Lunawada.

Within minutes of the candidates been declared, a buzz began after BJP's Jagdish Panchal posted a two liner in Hindi on social media. Both Panchal and Patel have been rivals within the party. Later in the day, Panchal deleted the post after it began to emerge that the post could have been in reaction to Patel being given a ticket.

Patel, who is from the Anandiben camp in BJP, was also the Ahmedabad city president for the party.

Later talking to the media, Patel said that several candidates had sought the tickets but only one can be given but it doesn't mean others were not worthy. "I will work for the development of the people. Amraiwadi constituency is already a developed one and will concentrate on further work that needs to be done," said Patel. He also expressed confidence that his party would not only win the seat but also win it with a bigger margin than earlier.

Meanwhile, Alpesh Thakor held a meeting with his supporters at Radhanpur after filing the nominations. Thakor addressing the workers apologised to them for earlier contesting the seat on a Congress ticket. The meeting was attended by top BJP leaders including state president Jitu Vaghani. In reaction to Thakor's statement, state Congress president Amit Chavda said that the party had committed an error in choosing Thakor and Zala from Radhanpur and Bayad for the 2017 assembly elections. "People vote for a party and not a person . I apologise to the voters and the party workers for giving tickets to such candidates," said Chavda.

The Congress had on Sunday declared candidates for four of the six seats, while the rest were declared on Monday. Raghu Desai and Babuji Thakor will be contesting from Radhanpur and Kheralu seats respectively for the Congress.

Meanwhile, the Congress candidate from Amraiwadi Dharmendra Patel and his supporters came to file their nominations with a garland made of flowers and onions to protest the rising cost of the vegetable.
