The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) has recommended that the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Kutch move the girl and some of her friends to a government-run child care home.

The DCPU came into the picture after reports emerged of the 16-year-old being raped in the bathroom of the Jeevan Prabhat Ashram in Gandhidham. The girl was raped by two juvenile inmates of the ashram. While the incident happened in August, an FIR was registered only in October after the cops and the DCPU got wind of the incident.

A source said that an inquiry into why the incident was not reported by the ashram, who took the decision to hide it etc will take time.

"It's a fact that the girl reported the incident to the superintendent. Since the family was also reluctant to file an FIR, it could be that they may have asked the superintendent to not report the incident. But only an inquiry will reveal the truth," said the source. The source also added that how the two juveniles managed to gain entry into the building that houses females also needs to be investigated.

Meanwhile, a source in the know said that the district legal services authority will also be lending a helping hand to the victim. "They will provide all the legal aid that is necessary. They will also ensure that the victim is paid a compensation as per the rules and regulations," said a member in the know.

Both Remya Mohan, Kutch collector who also heads the District Child Protection Unit, and Jayshreeben Makwana, chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee Kutch did not respond to messages from DNA about the status of the inquiry against the ashram. Jagruti Pandya, chairperson of the Gujarat State Commission for Protection of Child Rights said they have sought a report in the matter.
