The 20-year-old son of betting kingpin Dinesh Thakkar, aka Dinesh Kalgi, was arrested in the wee hours of Sunday on the charges of drunk driving and damaging public property.

Satellite police head constable Karsan Ambalal, who witnessed the incident when he was on duty at Shivranjani crossroads, said a black Verna car went on rampage outside the gate of Maruti Tower at 3:30am.

In his complaint with the Satellite police, the constable claimed that the vehicle first hit a traffic signal pole and started moving on the footpath. It then smashed a signboard and finally stopped after ramming into a large pillar. The accident was so severe that the rear wheel almost got detached from the axel.

On hearing about the accident, Satellite police rushed to the spot and nabbed the driver. Finding the young driver under the influence of alcohol, they took him to the police station in a PCR van.

On the way, the youngster told the cops that he is Daksh, son of Dinesh Thakkar alias Kalgi, and a resident of Sagar Samrat apartment near Jalaram temple in Paldi.

Investigation revealed that Daksh is a third-year BCom student at a city-based college. Recently, he had gone to London on a month-long study tour and returned on July 28. In his confession, Daksh claimed that he purchased a liquor bottle from free liquor zone at Dubai airport.

Late on Saturday night, he was allegedly consuming liquor at his home when one of his friends called him up from Iskcon crossroads, requesting for a drop to his home in Gulbai Tekra.

Daksh took his Verna car and headed towards Iskcon via Nehrunagar circle, but lost control of his vehicle near Maruti Tower.

According to police, Daksh was trying to make a phone call from his mobile when the incident took place.
