While on one hand Dr Benjamin Spock carved a niche on bookshelves around the world with his treatise on childcare and safe pregnancy, another of his ilk in Amdavad has disgraced the community by selling infants and finally getting handcuffed for the heinous crime. Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) has finally arrested Dr Bharat Atit on Tuesday after the tainted doc surrendered following DCB’s thorough investigation which revealed his murky baby business. The husband of former BJP mayor Malini Atit had sold three infants, cops find.

“There are good chances that this could be an inter-state racket. We are still trying to trace the original parents of the other two infants and are going through corporation records maintained by the Rakhial ward,” said AK Sharma.

The officials will also check if Atit maintained records of all the surrogacy patients, Sharma added.

According to the police, Porbandar-based doctor, Dilip Vyas, said that he was not aware of Atit’s true intentions. Vyas said that Atit brought two women so that at least one would conceive the child. However, when both were found pregnant, Atit forced Vyas to buy the two infants. The case intensified when Atit arranged fake documents where he mentioned that the babies were conceived by Vyas’s partner, Dina. Atit further convinced Vyas to buy the infants so that he could he make more money. Therefore, Vyas was forced to lie to his family about the babies.

During primary investigation it had come to light that one of the other two babies is from Dakor village in Kheda district. The cops had earlier said that one of the three infants belonged to Mona Thakor alias Manju.

Further, Atit frequently tried to misguide the cops by giving different statements. However, this could not go on for long as police soon nailed his lies.  Meanwhile, the officials are now trying to find out if Dalpat Parmar and Neeru Rathi, Atit’s agent and nurse, are connected to other doctors as well.
