A man identified as Sudama Raut, 40, a native of Odisha, was found with several cuts on his body, including his private parts at Asaram Ashram in Sabarmati in Motera on Sunday evening.

Chandkheda police said they got a call from the Ashram authorities saying the saadhak was found covered in blood inside the storeroom and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Primary investigation by police revealed that he tried to commit suicide by using a knife.

Sources said he had gone to a storeroom to get something. When he did not return even after an hour, others went inside to check on him and found him lying on the floor covered in blood.

AC Patel, Inspector, Chandkheda Police Station, said, "We have registered a non-cognisable offence. We were not able to get a statement from the victim. His condition is serious as there was a lot of blood loss. He is unconscious right now. Once he regains consciousness, further investigation will be conducted."

The senior police officer also said stated that primary investigations revealed that he tried to commit suicide. But the injuries on his body create a suspicion. "The victim had injuries on his neck, hands and private parts," the officer added.

Raut had been working as a saadakh in the ashram for almost 17 years. He lived in Surat before he moved to Motera.
