After the opposition Congress failed to rise to the occasion, it is now the turn of Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal to take up the cause of farmers protesting against rampant industrialisation in Gujarat.

Kejriwal is scheduled to meet farmers protesting the Adani SEZ (Special Economic Zone) project in Kutch, farmers of Mandal-Becharaji project in Viramgam, Dholera project and Agariyas (salt-pan workers) in the Little Rann of Kutch. Earlier, the protesting farmers had sought support from the Congress. But, local Congress leaders in most areas did not support the cause, despite it being a strong case against the government.

Kejriwal will be landing in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, around 8.30 am. Sources in the know said he would address a group of farmers at Eshwada village before leaving for Bhuj. The government had removed 36 villages from the Mandal-Becharaji SIR (special investment region) and has almost stopped work on eight other villages that were part of the SIR.

Farmers, however, continue to protest against the Maruti plant in Santalpur. In LRK, the lease of the salt-pan workers has expired and the industry is facing a severe crisis. Significantly, the face of urban India’s most successful movement against industrialisation in Mahuva — Dr Kanubhai Kalsariya — has already joined the AAP.

Kejriwal, incidentally, had earlier stated that his visit to Gujarat would aim at analysing the development claims made by the Gujarat government. Multiple teams of AAP will be descending on the state during the four days Kejriwal will be here. They will spread out in urban and rural areas to investigate the development claims of Modi.

In Ahmedabad, he will address a public rally at Vijay Chowk in Bapunagar. Though the purpose of Kejriwal’s visit is not to ‘finalise candidates’, he is expected to meet a few people, who have applied to contest on AAP ticket.

“We want to study the Gujarat model of development as claimed by BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi,” sources said. The aggression with which AAP is approaching Gujarat, it is becoming evident that they are targeting Modi in a focused manner.
