Farmers from Surat and other districts in the state have moved the Gujarat High Court against the state government's move to acquire their land for the bullet train project. Over 3,000 farmers from 192 villages in Gujarat will be affected by the land acquisition for the ambitious project that will connect Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

The court has asked the government to file its reply by Monday. The petition has challenged the government's move to acquire land on the grounds that as per the Land Acquisition Act, if land is to be acquired in more than one state for the project, the land acquisition has to be done by the centre and not the state.

But in this project, the notification for land acquisition has been made by the Gujarat and Maharashtra governments. Since this is in violation of the Act, the notification should be dismissed, the petition states.

It also states that as per the new rules, the farmers should be given the maximum market value of the land and that before the land is acquired, the Jantri is to be revised.

But in this case, the 2011 Jantri is still in force, preventing farmers from getting a good price and the state from getting revenue in the form of stamp duty.
