In a revelation that underlines political conspiracy in Ishrat case, CBI’s charge sheet in the matter mentions audio recordings where Amit Shah is allegedly instructing GL Singhal to misuse police for purposes of “miscarriage of justice”. This takes CBI closer to implicating Shah in the case.

The conversations took place in August and September 2009 between the then MoS (home) and a close Modi-aide and the accused cop.
Any coercive action against Shah would now spell national political repercussions.

CM Narendra Modi, after his elevation as chairperson of BJP’s election campaign committee, had appointed Shah as poll in-charge of Uttar Pradesh unit of BJP. He is an essential cog, and ‘his’ UP a crucial state, if Modi aims to steamroll his way to New Delhi.

Singhal, who resigned as SP (Kheda) right after his arrest on February 21, had spilled the beans against Shah during CBI investigations last month. The panch-nama, which is part of the bulky charge sheet in the case, mentions that Singhal submitted two pen drives to CBI on June 9.

According to the document, the pen drive contains 267 audio files.
“Shri GL Singhal informed that these files contain telephonic conversations between him and Shri Amit Shah, the then MoS (Home), Gujarat in the month of August and September 2009 relating to misuse of the police for extra legal purposes in miscarriage of justice,” reads a paragraph in the panch-nama.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), at present, is verifying the telephonic conversations and may include the inferences in supplementary charge sheet due on July 25.

The timing of the conversation is significant (August and September 2009) as it was around this time that Centre had filed an affidavit before Gujarat High Court (HC) in Ishrat case – stating that Ishrat and three others were terrorists.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had filed the affidavit on August 6, 2009 but withdrew it on September 29 for a second affidavit. These events led to a heightened political drama about profile of those encountered.

The present BJP in-charge of UP for 2014 polls, Amit Shah, was named accused in Sohrab and Tulsi fake encounter cases, but is currently out on bail. Singhal earned himself a default bail after CBI failed to file a charge sheet against him in stipulated 90 days. CBI, perhaps, gave him safe passage in return of some clinching evidence.
