Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Chavda said on Wednesday that his priority was to ensure the party’s win in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and exhorted party leaders and workers to work together to achieve the same.

Chavda made the remarks after formally taking charge as Gujarat Congress president in the presence of senior state Congress leaders and hundreds of party workers.

“The Congress is not a political party but an ideology. We will fight to free the country from people who follow the RSS ideology,” the 42-year-old said.

He said that the Congress would to go to the people and play the role of Lokpal to expose the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) corruption. He also asked party leaders and workers to start preparing for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, now barely a year away.

“The Congress will go in the midst of the people and strengthen its organisation. We will win a majority of the seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Ahmedabad’s mayor in 2020 will be from Congress, and in 2022, the Gujarat chief minister will also be from our party,” he asserted.

Chavda is a four-term MLA, and represents Anklav seat in Anand district in the state assembly.

Born on April 24, 1976, he is the youngest to be appointed as Gujarat Congress chief.

His appointment came as a surprise to many, but there are expectations that the move will enable the party woo Other Backward Classes (OBCs), especially the youth among them, to score a poll win.

Speaking at the installation ceremony, newly appointed Gujarat Congress in-charge, Rajeev Satav, lauded party workers saying that it was because of them that BJP, which had been  making claims of winning 150 seats in the assembly elections, was restricted to just 99.

“Congress has emerged stronger, and looking at the party’s performance in the assembly’s budget session, it remains to be seen if the government can survive the Opposition,” Satav said.

He adding that the party would reward performers, and those working against its interests would have to face the consequences.

Paresh Dhanani, referring to his own appointment as leader of the opposition in the assembly, and that of Chavda as state party president, said the beginning of change in Congress had started from Gujarat.

“We all have to make a choice — whether we want a post or work for change. People who are occupying posts in the party will have to work like party workers. The Congress will rise like a phoenix,” he said.
