After a slow start, winter seems to be back with a vengeance. The woollens may have remained within the closet all November and December, but now Amdavadis have been forced to remain in woollens to beat the weather. Incidentally, even as the city complained of the biting cold and wind, particularly in the morning and in the evening, it is far from breaking any record as far as minimum temperature is concerned.

The city on Tuesday recorded a maximum temperature of 11.8 degree Celsius, which is normal for the period.

But it was Naliya and Bhuj that faced the winter fury with the former registering a minimum of 3.4 degree Celsius. Bhuj recorded a minimum temperature of 9.5 degree Celsius, making it the second coldest place in the state. However, the Met department has predicted that the city temperature will drop to 11 degree Celsius on Wednesday aided by dry winds. If that happens, Ahmedabad will record a temperature far less than what was seen in 2009. In that year, the minimum temperature had reached the 11.5 degree Celsius on December 27.  It should be noted that the lowest temperature ever recorded in the city for the month of December was in 1983 when mercury plummeted to 3.6 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, citizens continued to battle the chill with hot tea and snacks.

“This year I thought we would not experience winter. But the last few days have been very cold, particularly for school children who have to get up early,” said Khushali Sampat, a resident of Naranpura.

Morning joggers and health enthusiasts too made it a point to gulp down cups of hot tea to beat the cold. “Usually, I don’t take tea while on my jogging trips but these days it is so cold that it is better to have one while out,” said Ramesh Panchal, a senior citizen in Satellite.
