Amid the growing controversy, which according to many is aimed to tarnish the civic body's image ahead of the assembly elections, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has come up with a fresh idea. It is planning to wash all bridges and flyovers across the city.

The controversy of putting cross marks on some houses and walls of societies in Paldi area by Solid Waste Management (SWM) department of the civic body was aimed to put the AMC on the back foot, according to many.

However, the AMC's fresh move is believed to dilute the controversy.

The incident of putting marks for identification of the door-to-door waste collection has tarnished AMC's image, in which many have sniffed a political vendetta.

To control the damage, the SWM on Wednesday has decided to wash all bridges and flyovers in the city. This is going to happen for the first time. The AMC will use treated water for the project.

"This is a new initiative to keep the city clean. The flyovers are getting swept daily. But they never wash it. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative by us to wash the bridges. We are going to wash 50 flyovers in the city," said Harshad Solanki, director of SWM department, AMC.

It is to be noted that once AMC's former chief D Thara had also announced to wash city roads once in every week with treated water. The project never started.

The civic body is using treated sewage for watering gardens and green patches. The initiative also shows an innovative method of civic body, which may get some points for evaluation of Swachh City Sarvekshan under Swachh Bharat Mission.
