Taking a leaf out of the tragedy that unfolded at the Odhav government colony, the civic body has now decided to survey all the government housing colonies within their jurisdiction.

According to the Ahmedabad Municipal corporation (AMC) standing committee chairman Amul Bhatt, the civic body will soon start inspecting all the government colonies under also Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Rajiv Awas Yojana, Indira Awas Yojana or Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana within Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation limits.

"We will inspect all the units to check the structural stability. After Odhav's housing colony was evacuated, we have decided to audit structures of other housing colonies. The move is to secure the safety of the occupants. We have constructed the houses and awarded them to the beneficiaries. But, as apart of our moral duty we will do this job," said Bhatt.

It is to be noted that on August 26, two buildings in Odhav's government housing colony collapsed and a person also died. Taking an immediate action after the mishap, the civic officials surveyed all the units for structural stability.

"We surveyed the remaining 82 buildings. Sadly, not a single unit is safe for habitation. We have evacuated nearly 7,500 people," added Bhatt.

The civic body is going to redevelop the scheme and allot new housing units to the original beneficiaries found from the colony.

When the houses were allotted, it cost Rs 68,000 to the beneficiaries. However, none of them has paid the full amount. There are around 18 occupants who have paid 75% of the loan. It will be up to the contractors how much to charge. However, the original beneficiaries would be given this free of cost, after paying their dues to different agencies.

"During the survey, we found only 30% are owners. They will get houses under the newly developed scheme. it will take around two years," remarked Bhatt.

Ground plus seven-floor building to come up at Odhav

According to a senior AMC official, all units in Odhav have been evacuated and in few days the remaining units will be demolished. According to General Development Control Regulations 2016, private players would be given contracts to redevelop the colony. The new housing colony would have ground plus seven floors, including commercial establishment.
