The civic body has leased out the land to its company named Metro Express Link for Gandhinagar Ahmedabad (MEGA) for the works of the upcoming Metro rail in the city.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will give 825 square meters of land to MEGA near the Amraiwadi area, for which the civic body is slated to raze an Anganwadi and a Pay & Use toilet. However, MEGA will construct the same units, which will be demolished in the first place, at a different location and will also bear the cost of the same.
The company needs this space in order to construct a Metro station and a parking for two-wheeler vehicles.
Earlier, the civic body had allotted 400 square meters of the plot for the station purpose. However, MEGA had demanded 425 square meters of land near the earlier allocated land for the parking purpose as well.
Interestingly, the AMC will get only Re 1 from MEGA for leasing out the land for 99 years as the space will only be used for parking purposes. Other acquired land by the rail authority had been given as per the current Jantri rate. There is also a provision in the proposed work that if there will be a variation in the purpose of land, MEGA will only be able to do it by paying an advance rent of 20 years.
MEGA has pulled up their socks to be able to run the Metro by September 2018. Two routes will be operational by then. According to the sources, before the general election announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants the Metro to be operational in Ahmedabad to show Gujarat's development model.
