During the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) standing committee meeting on Thursday, it was decided that the civic body will prepare a list of Hindu monuments, and will pitch them for heritage title. The motive of the inclusion is for the protection of the monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India.

The walled part of Ahmedabad was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO on July 8, 2017.

Amit Shah, leader of the BJP in the corporation, said that the ASI has ignored Hindu monuments.

Karnamukteshwar is an ancient Shiv temple situated beside New Cloth Market, outside Sarangpur Darwaja. It has historical significance and has been preserved in the memory of King Karnadev and his old city of Karnavati.

According to Gujarat Tourism website, the Kalupur Swaminarayan temple is the first temple of the Swaminarayan sect to have been built. In 1822, land was given by the British government to do so, and responsibility for the construction of the temple was endowed upon Ananandanand Swami. This temple is the starting point for the heritage walk through the old city.

"We have asked the committee members to prepare a list of monuments which they want to include on the heritage list. There were suggestions such as Karnamukteshwar Mahadev, Chakudia Mahadev and Swaminarayan temple," said Amul Bhatt, standing committee chairman, AMC.

The three temples are over two centuries old. According to the committee member, although they are not part of the ASI list, they hold religious importance.

"After receiving the suggestions, we will compile names and send it over to the Archaeological Survey of India for consideration," added Bhatt.

"Every monument that is part of the UNESCO heritage list will be tagged and a special board will be placed before the monuments for identification. The process has already been started," said the chairman.
