Dinesh Sharma on Saturday said how the civic body’s claim of providing water 24/7 is false and they have to purchase water from the state government
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has purchased Rs 435 crore worth water to cater to the water needs of citizens in last eight years, according to the information provided by leader of opposition Dinesh Sharma.
Sharma on Saturday said how the civic body’s claim of providing water 24/7 is false and they have to purchase water from the state government. “From five different sources the civic body is managing to get water. And for all the five sources, the state government is charging money from AMC. Sadly, in spite paying crores of rupees to the state, people in city are not getting enough water,” said Sharma.
“There is no regular water provided by AMC to its people. On an average, AMC pays Rs 8 crore monthly to the state government. Other than this, AMC also fetches water from its own sources like bore wells. Still some area do not get water,” Sharma said.
He said that despite the Smart City label, AMC administration has to rely on tankers to reach out to people. “AMC has spent around Rs 2 crore in last one year for renting tankers: in new west zone, Rs 62.06 lakh, in west zone Rs 45.13 lakh, in north zone Rs 32.53 lakh and in east zone Rs 56.27 lakh,” he said.
Sharma also alleged that the BJP-run civic body has been giving false hope to its people with its round-the-clock water scheme promise. Sharma alleged that the civic body has failed to provide even water veen twice a day with proper pressure. “Most of the slum pockets, where around 30 per cent population stays, get polluted water ing. There is no proper plan by the AMC for people when it comes to supplying clean water,” Sharma said.
‘WORKING TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY’
- To allegations of poor water supply, chairman of water and sewage committee, Ramesh Desai, said the authorities are working on improving the quality of water.
- In slum pockets where people face the problem of getting contaminated water, authorities are replacing water pipelines, the chairman of the water and sewage committee.
