Civic officials are not allowing the shop keepers in the city to work all seven days in a week, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has complained to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in a letter.

Businessmen say that with retail trade getting organized, traditional Mom-and-Pop stores are facing a severe competition. While malls and supermarkets are allowed to remain open all the seven days of a week, shop keepers are not, which has deprived the shop keepers of a level playing field.

In a press statement, GCCI said that Labour and Employment Department had amended the Shops and Establishment Act to allow shopkeepers to operate throughout the week. In spite of this, the officials of AMC are forcing the shopkeepers to shut their shop at least once a week. “Thus AMC is unnecessarily harsh on shop keepers by forcing them to shut their shops,” GCCI said in the statement.

GCCI office-bearers said that forcible closure of shops is distorting the competition ecosystem. While organized retail players can remain open for all the seven days, the retail shopkeepers are forced to close their shop on one day per week and therefore they have to lose out on their customers at least for one day. Organized retailers also have advantages in terms of sourcing materials in large quantities and therefore enabling them to offer discounts, which neighbourhood stores are unable. Under such circumstances, depriving the shopkeepers of genuine level playing field.

VAT DEADLINE

Gujarat government has extended to April 30 the deadline for filing final VAT returns and VAT audit reports for the April-June period of the fiscal 2017-18. The GST roll-out on July 1, 2017 brought an end to VAT regime on most goods. But it was applicable for the first three months of the fiscal 2017-18, and so the final return and audit reports have to be filed accordingly.
