The civic body has initiated a feasibility study to decide whether buses run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Transport service (AMTS) and the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) can be diverted to the BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) corridor passing through the city. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation wants to find out whether the move would lead to congestion, which, in turn, might increase the travel time for those using the route, according to senior officials who did not want to be named in the report.

"The BRTS team fears this could reduce the number of passenger travelling through BRT," said an officer. When the BRTS was introduced, it was meant exclusively for the passage of their own buses. "The team is studying each stretch closely to study the number of buses including the GSRTC buses passing from the area," said another source in the civic body.

According to another official, if the GSRTC buses were pushed to the corridor, the frequency between two buses might be reduced by just a couple of minutes on busy stretches such as Nehrunagar to Iskcon. A senior official said the AMC would take a decision in the matter only after reviewing the results of the ongoing survey. The officials said they were also looking at the possibility of only allowing AMTS buses. The AMTS buses run at a frequency of 10 minutes while the same for BRT buses was five to seven. Hence the AMC could revise the timing of AMTS buses to avoid congestion. However, another officer said the bundling of buses that the move would entail was the biggest matter for concern. He said that this would lead to multiple buses plying together on the same route at the same time and that would cause major congestion.

NEW ROUTE

  • Government had ratified the decision to convert the BRTS corridor into Urban Transport Corridor (UTC) allowing buses including AMTS, GSRTC, and school buses, among other, during peak hours in November 2017.

  • Former Municipal Commissioner D.Thara had first mooted the plan in late 2015.
