The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has been carrying out surveys of underground utilities like the water networks, drainage networks and trunk lines in Ahmedabad city. The survey will not only help the civic body fix problems in the decades-old underground utilities but will also come in handy while planning projects and avoiding delays.

The civic body has a wide network of main trunk lines extending upto around 350 km, along with a 4200 km water distributary network for distributing water to the city. Similarly, the drainage network has a 250 km main trunk line supported by a 2500-km-long distributary network. The network is more than 60 years old leaving the civic body with insufficient information. “The AMC engineering department had to depend on the senior officials for reliable information about the network in terms of proper location of the pipeline, which areas does it cover and diameter of the pipe,” said a senior AMC engineering department official.

The civic body has now decided to put the information on record and is preparing designs of the network with the help of present and retired senior officials. “We have completed surveying 70% of the water supply network while the drainage survey is in progress in different zones,” said M Thennarasan, deputy municipal commissioner, engineering department, AMC. “It is learnt that in the current scenario the water project provides water to the city but its distribution is zone-wise.

We, therefore, get data of the water supplied to the city but not how much reaches end-users.

There is a possibility of wastage of water due to leakages, duplication of connections and similar problems. Digitisation of water and drainage network will fix such issues,” said Thennarasan.

The survey will also help the new staff to get acquainted with the network, making problem-solving easy and speedy. The survey is also expected to help in material procurement as proper data of the network will be available with the civic body. “It will also help in assessing feasibility of projects like that of building underpasses and flyovers. .” said sources in AMC.
