AMC drive to help in health issues linked to air quality

With strategies to help mitigate health risks posed by air pollution in the city, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) launched an updated Air Information & Response (AIR) plan on Wednesday. 

Over last one year, the civic body and local partners have identified key pollution sources and have convened an expert working group that has developed policy recommendations for achieving pollution reductions. 

“The AIR plan focuses on key areas like health risk communication, increased preparedness, information sharing, activities for vulnerable population and long-term actions,” said mayor Bijal Patel.  As part of AIR Plan, the AMC had launched School Flag Programme which is working with around 90 schools across the city for air pollution awareness. The system is based on colour coding as per the level of air pollution.  

Now, the civic body has prepared several Information Education and Communication material to reach out to the public where the air quality measuring unit sends an alarm. Along with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, the civic body is getting air quality of city in three days advance. SAFAR project director Dr Gufran Beig said that it is time to take a step connecting health to action on the ground.
