Expressing their unhappiness with the the Leader of Opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Congress party councillors in the corporation have written to the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee demanding change in leadership.

A senior Congress leader said that a delegation of councillors on Tuesday met senior party leaders for a third time at the GPCC office to discuss the issue, and also made representations for the same.

The tenure of an LoP lasts for two and a half years. This year the city got a new Mayor and committee heads, however, there has been no change in the LoP despite the completion of tenure of Dinesh Sharma. Following this, 40 out of 50 councillors from the Congress have written to the GPPC seeking change in leadership.

The issue came to the fore when the new municipal commissioner, Vijay Nehra joined and LoP, Dinesh Sharma met him with a select few representatives of the Congress party. Sharma met his party councillors only after a week, which made the latter feel sidelined.

"Dinesh Sharma didn't inform us about the first meeting with the new commissioner. Also, most of the time he is busy with his kin and not listening to our problems. He is ignoring most of team members," alleged one of the councillors.

"Sharma has the backing of two existing Congress MLAs who are muslims. The other two MLAs want change. Now it is upto the party to decide after 40 of us have written to the top leaders," added the councillor.

In his defence, Sharma said if a candidate from the minority can retain the position of LoP then why can't a candidate from the majority?

Meanwhile, the protesting councillors are considering to skip the AMC's general board meeting if the opposition is not changed is not changed.

Manish Doshi, spokesperson, GPCC, said, "Congress party is always there along with their elected representative to give justice to the citizens to fight battle against the corrupt BJP. As a part of management — change or no change — the party will consider this matter soon."

BAD RECORD

This wouldn't be the first time that Sharma has been in the limelight for the wrong reasons. Sharma's ticket to contest from Bapunagar for the 2017 state elections was cancelled on the grounds of indisciplinary actions. The ticket was given to Himmatsinh Patel, who won from the seat.
