AMC collects sweets samples from 36 units

The food samples were found to be adulterated and containing harmful chemicals during the festive season

The civic body's flying squad from the health department took samples of sweets from 36 units in city on Tuesday to check for adulteration and contamination. Reports on these samples will be available in the next 15 days.

The move came as the food samples were found to be adulterated and containing harmful chemicals during the festive season. "As there is an increase in demand, shopkeepers tend to use sub-standard ingredients to prepare sweets. They go stale if kept for long," said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in charge medical officer of health.

"In the past week, they have destroyed more than 740kg of stale sweets and because there were some other hygiene issues," added Dr Solanki.

If the samples collected by the team are found to be sub-standard, the person responsible will face a fine ranging between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, Dr Solanki said. As per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, a case can be registered against people responsible for selling adulterated sweets.

Also, six samples were declared unfit or sub-standard to eat on Tuesday, which were taken randomly last week. The samples of Sweet Mawa from SC Mawavala near Raipur Darwaja was declared sub-standard, Ghee from Patel dairy farm of Ghatlodiya was also declared unfit.
