AMC budget aims to make Ahmedabad a sports hub

On Tuesday, while presenting the draft budget for the next fiscal, municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra stressed on developing multiple sports facilities in the city. Ahmedabad will soon be home to the world's largest cricket stadium. The city already has international-level sport complex at Kankaria which hosts world cup and national level matches of kabaddi and badminton.

Two new sports complexes have been proposed for the budget 2019-20, at a cost of Rs 10 crore, announced Nehra. He also announced a new project of 'Ahmedabad Sports Promotion Foundation'.

"We are coming up with a new Special Purpose Vehicle for the sports complexes and sports facilities along with the Sports Authority of Gujarat. The SPV has been christened as Ahmedabad Sports Promotion Foundation which will train athletes. Under this project, international coaches and trainers will be roped in for different sports," said Nehra.

"We want to make platforms for different sports in the city to prepare best athletes and provide training to them," he further added.

The commissioner also announced that tennis courts will come up at 10 different locations in the city and Rs 30 crore has been sanctioned for the same. The courts will be as per international standards, with synthetic floors, nets, chain-link fencing and flood lights.

For overall physical development, health and fitness, gymnasium facilities will be focused upon. The gymnasium located at Parimal Garden will get a facelift at a cost of Rs 50 lakh and five new gyms have been proposed for the next fiscal. More facilities will be added in the existing 40 gyms run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

Earlier, in 2016-17, there was an announcement about a new sports complex in association with the Sports Authority of India, and fund allocation of Rs 85 crore has already been made for the same. This will be of international standard and there will be both indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Such facilities can even be venues for the Olympics.

Five new swimming pools have been proposed at a cost of Rs 20 crore while 14 existing pools will be renovated. Two sport complexes have been conceptualised at the riverfront, on both sides. One will come up behind NID on the western bank and the other will be near Shahpur on the eastern bank. The complexes will have cricket pitch, tennis court, skating rink, jogging track, multiple sport courts, etc, at a cost of Rs 27 crore.

Other new projects proposed in budget

  • 5 new multi-level parking complexes at a cost of Rs 500 crore
     
  • Free food for homeless who will stay in the Rain basera at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore
