Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation standing committee has increased the budgetary allocation for road projects for 2018-19. Pravin Patel, Chairman of the committee, on Friday allocated Rs 113 crore for road projects, which is almost 60% more than the Rs 70 crore proposed by the Municipal Commissioner in his budget, presented on January 19.

Patel added Rs 12 crore to the budget to widen bridges and for the construction of a new flyover connecting Naroda and Patia. He proposed a feasibility report for the overbridges at Kubernagar, Kalupur, and those between Vasna to Pirana.

"We have decided to widen all the roads connecting Sabarmati riverfront to the city to help them handle traffic better," Patel said. "Apart from these proposals, the standing committee has decided to construct a flyover linking Naroda and Patia, and widen the Kalupur and Kubernagar railway overbridges". In a major move, the committee has decided to start a pilot project to provide free left turns. They will reduce the size of the footpath to create space for smooth left turns. The move is intended to ease traffic at junctions. They have yet to reveal the locations where the pilot project will be implemented.

Wall-to-wall carpeting near Civil Hospital, Meghaninagar and Jagannath temple in Jamalpur is also on the cards. This will facilitate movement of traffic. The civic body intends to create more zebra crossings and road dividers in the areas as they witness high footfall.

To oversee and control the quality of roads, the municipal corporation has decided to set up a "laboratory on wheels" service for testing the material used in their construction. The AMC has also decided to set up a sewage water treatment plant in Naroda. It is expected to treat 10 million liters of water every day. The treated sewage water will be recycled and supplied to industries in the area, the committee said. The AMC has increased its "area development fund" for 2018-19 by Rs 3 lakh from the existing Rs 22 lakh. Patel said the money will be used by corporators for projects related to cleanliness in their respective wards.
