The Thakor Sena president Alpesh Thakor who joined Congress on Monday can prove to be a game changer in the upcoming polls for the seats in North Gujarat which are dominated by the Thakor community. There are 23 such seats in North Gujarat and 10 in central Gujarat, as per the findings of a survey by an agency directly connected to the Gujarat government.

Out of these 33 seats which could see the impact, BJP has 12 seats in North Gujarat and one in Central Gujarat. Besides, six out of these 33 were won by Congress candidates but they defected to BJP just before the Rajya Sabha polls in August. There are a total of 34 Assembly seats in North Gujarat. The survey states that the impact may be visible in North Gujarat where Congress won 20 out of 34 seats in the 2012 polls, shocking the ruling BJP as North Gujarat was believed to be its fort. This time, Alpesh Thakor can increase BJP's pain, the survey indicates.

BJP MP from Kheda, Devusinh Chauhan, from the Thakor community, said, "Alpesh Thakor has put his hand on the right vein of the community and raised issues like strict (liquor) Prohibition and unemployment. It helped him gain sympathy of Thakors which turned out to be a huge crowd in his rally in Gandhinagar on Monday. It is to be seen whether it gets converted into votes for Congress or not." He added, "We firmly believe Thakor community has trust on the BJP and there are many MLAs from the community who could counter Alpesh Thakor in polls."

Chauhan added, "Central Gujarat would not see impact of Alpesh Thakor as the issues he raised are not a factor here. There are committed voters of Congress but there is a vacuum of leadership as the elected members of Congress acted as non-performing assets and lost the trust of people."

Congress believes that Thakor Sena would help it strengthen its network in North Gujarat.
