Huge response till Wed evening takes cops by surprise.
The city police’s social media campaign got off to a good start with the sort of rousing response from Amdavadis that can show up even self-styled online media gurus.
Just a day after the city commissioner of police, Shivanand Jha, unveiled the page on Facebook, it received as many as 3,611 likes till Wednesday evening from the public as well as members of the city police. This initial response has come as a surprise to the officials.
The page, which was officially launched by Jha on Tuesday, had close to 500 ‘likes’ till then. However, 24 hours later, the count went up to 3,611.
Response to the page, which was jointly developed by students of city-based institutes, including Amrit Pal Singh of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ankur, Abhit, Shailesh and Shamanth from Indian Institute of Management (IIMA), and Sonu Vaghela of LD Engineering College, has stumped senior city cops as well.
According to additional director of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and JCP of Special Branch, Ahmedabad, Shamsher Singh: “We are grateful for the tremendous response within a day of the page’s announcement. Our estimation had been that the count would rise by around 1,000 per day in the initial days and build-up eventually. However, the interest it has garnered is a pleasant surprise.”
The page is currently being run by a team of five police personnel with help from a private project consultancy firm. “After the initial phase of three months, our team comprising special branch PSI Chaudhary, computer branch PSI Chaandna and three constables will be solely responsible for the page’s upkeep,” Singh said.
However, the numbers game is not what the police are looking at, said Jha. “We aim to ensure that all the positive recommendations on the page by the public are taken into consideration and responded to with requisite action,” the commissioner said.
Meanwhile, among the various reviewers on the page, there are also some that have vented their ire on the city police. “We have no intention of taking down abusive posts and will let them continue posting on the page. We will engage with them to understand what the cause of their anger is and try to respond with appropriate action to their issues,” Singh explained.
