A city-based Sessions court on Tuesday sent Mohammed Farooq Shaikh, who was arrested in connection with the 2002 Akshardham terrorist attack case, to a three-day police remand. 34 persons were killed, and around 80 were injured in the incident, which took place on September 24, 2002, a few months after the Godhra riots.

Shaikh was arrested on Monday, 16 years after the dastardly attack, in a joint operation by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Ahmedabad crime branch, from Ahmedabad airport, minutes after he arrived from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Shaikh is accused of funding the terror attack by raising and sending money from Riyadh after the 2002 riots.

The crime branch on Tuesday moved an application for granting a 14-day remand of Shaikh, which was turned down by the court. In the remand application, the police had claimed that it wants to probe the conspiracy hatched by Shaikh and his brother, Mohammed Salim Saikh at Riyadh. It also sought his remand to probe the roles played by Pakistan-based militant outfits — Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The other issues that the police wanted to investigate during the custodial interrogation include the amount of fund collected by Shaikh and sent to Gujarat; and the persons responsible for harbouring him for 16 years; and others involved in the fundraising.

The demand for the 14-day remand was opposed by Shaikh's counsel, who submitted that the Supreme Court has acquitted all the accused and has reprimanded the crime branch for its probe in the sensitive case. It was also submitted that those who were arrested by the police after the SC verdict was also acquitted.

After hearing the contention of both the parties, the court sent Shaikh to police custody till the morning of November 30.
