Amdavadis woke up to a wet Monday as the city got drenched to the core. By late evening, the climate resembled that of a hill station with fog setting in, thereby giving it an ethereal look. The showers that began around 9 in the morning signaled the official arrival of monsoon in the city.

The rain helped the city cool down considerably as the maximum temperature was 31.8 degree Celsius, seven degrees below normal. Incidentally, the Met department has predicted good rain in the next 24 hours.

“The onset of monsoon in Gujarat began on June 9 and it further advanced to Ahmedabad on Monday. So far, south Gujarat has received very good rain,” said Jayanta Sarkar, the state director of the India Meteorological Department. Sarkar said the monsoon arrived six days earlier this year.

“Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in some parts of Gujarat in the next 24 hours and the long-range forecast suggests that monsoon will be normal in the state this year,” he said. Sarkar further stated that though Kutch and north Gujarat were yet to receive good rainfall, the conditions were favourable.

Amdavadis, meanwhile, made the most of the weather by enjoying the rain and gorging on dalwada and other street food. With several colleges yet to reopen, many students took the opportunity to go for long drives on the highway.

“Once it started pouring, I went out with my friends to get drenched. We then went for a long drive to Sarkhej. By the time I returned, I found children playing cricket in my compound and I joined them. It was fun,” said Ravi Soni, a resident of Satellite.

Prutha Shah, a student and resident of Anjali crossroads, said she, too, went on a long drive with friends. “We packed some bhajiya and played some impromptu guitar while sitting in the rain,” said Shah, a student of music.

Trees were uprooted at four places. The rain, coupled with a gusty wind, fell trees at Chandlodia, Shahpur gate, Vastrapur and Commerce six roads. Even a cave-in was reported from Vasna.

The city on Monday recorded 7.51 mm rainfall with west zone getting the lion’s share of 18.5 mm. The new west zone received 13.5 mm, central 9 mm and south zone 3.17 mm. Apart from Ahmedabad, the other districts that received rain included Jamnagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Amreli, Bhavnagar and almost all the districts of south Gujarat.
