Eight labourers suffered minor injuries after a slab of the water tank collapsed on the labourers working at the construction site of an underground water tank on Monday.

The incident took place in the Nikol area of the city at around 3.20 pm. According to the sources, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had started the construction work of the underground water tank a couple of months ago. On Monday afternoon, eight labourers were working on the top slab, when suddenly the slab cracked and it collapsed and all of the labourers fell inside the tank.

After the incident took place, the Ahmedabad fire and emergency service (AFES) were informed about the incident and 14 fire fighting vehicles with 40 firemen including the senior fire officers were sent to the spot and the rescue operation was started immediately.

The labourers suffered minor injuries and were immediately rushed to the Civil hospital for medical care.

Chief Fire Officer, MF Dastoor said, "The incident took place after the top slab on the underground water got collapsed while the work was going on. During the rescue operation, we were able to rescue all the eight labourers and they were later sent to Civil hospital for treatment."

Dastoor also said that initially, when the fire team reached, six labourers were immediately rescued out of the basement, while the other two were rescued a few minutes later.

According to the investigation officials, it is suspected that weak materials were used in construction work after which the slab collapsed. Sources said that the AMC officials will investigate the matter.
