Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will make a visit to Ahmedabad during his India tour next month, the popular leader announced on Monday.

The visit will come close on the heels of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the city earlier this month, and the fourth by a world leader since 2014.

The Canadian prime minister announced he will travel to India – at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi — for a state visit from February 17 to 23.

"This state visit, which includes stops in Agra, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, will provide an opportunity for Prime Minister Trudeau to connect with Indian leaders in government and business, promote the empowerment of women and girls, and strengthen Canada and India's close economic ties," an official statement by the Canadian government said.

The prime minister will also speak to students, and visit several landmarks, including Taj Mahal, the Golden Temple, and Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar, the statement said. Sources said a visit to Sabarmati Ashram is also on the cards.

It could not be immediately ascertained if Modi will be accompanying Trudeau in Ahmedabad. He had accompanied Jinping, Abe and Netanyahu while they had come to Ahmedabad.

Prior to Netanyahu, Ahmedabad had played host to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in September 2017, a few months before the Assembly elections. Before that, Chinese President Xi Jinping had visited the city in September 2014.

During the week-long visit, Trudeau and Modi will reaffirm the friendship between the two countries and discuss ways to create good middle class jobs for Canadians and Indians alike, the statement said further.
