Late on Monday night, a team of sleuths from the Ahmedabad Crime branch busted a factory in the Chamanpura area for manufacturing and selling spurious ghee by passing it off as Amul Ghee.

According to the police, the factory was being run by two people, who used to sell the spurious ghee to the local markets.

The crime branch officials, on Monday, received a tip-off that in one of the shops at Sumel Business park in Chamanpura, spurious ghee was being produced and sold.

The crime branch sleuths led by sub-inspector Korat raided shop number 5 and seized valuables worth Rs 3.4 lakh. The valuables included the machine used to make ghee, Amul boxes, Amul packets, palm oil, and vanaspati.

The investigation revealed that the factory was run by the accused identified as Ramesh Sangula and Nemaram Mali. Both the accused are currently absconding.

BV Gohil, ACP of crime branch said, "It was found during the investigation that the accused were adding spurious substances to ghee in a bid to increase their profit margin. They were mixing palm oil and vanaspati with chemicals and were selling it in Amul boxes."

The primary investigation also revealed that the accused were selling the product to local vendors and in the nearby area as Amul ghee.
