Sanitation workers called off their strike on Wednesday morning, following a suspension threat.

Apart from that, their leaders were slammed by the Gujarat High Court after the civic body filed a petition on Monday itself. HC observed that the workers can't go on strike, and hold the civic body to ransom.

According to sources, the civic body had ordered suspension of 60 sanitation workers, who had violated the service norms. A letter was drafted on Tuesday night. Their leaders met municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra for a meeting.

However, the letters have not been distributed to the offenders yet. According to the protesters, the commissioner has agreed to consider their long-pending demands, and hence they have called off the strike.

"We have met the commissioner and he has agreed to consider all our 16 demands, phase-wise. Hence, we decided to call off the strike. Our workers will work effectively to make the city clean," said Kalpesh Makwana, general secretary, Ahmedabad Municipal Servants' Association.

"The strike has been called off. They made a representation before me, and they have agreed to work effectively. We will look in to their attendance, and if their demands are genuine, then we will consider those," said Vijay Nehra, municipal commissioner.

Meanwhile, the civic body has filed 12 police cases against those who were found guilty of littering garbage and hampering garbage collection activities. There are two versions regarding the police cases. The civic officials said they are not going to withdraw the cases, while Makwana said that the civic body will withdraw the cases.

"They are going to withdraw the cases filed against us. In fact, some of the cases will be withdrawn by the end of the day," said Makwana.
