Ahmedabad's traffic department to install over 100 CCTV cameras in towing trucks and yards

City's traffic department has taken a new initiative to install CCTV cameras in towing vehicles and in yards, where the towed vehicles are kept until claimed. There are at least 150 CCTV cameras that will be installed — two in each of the 53 trucks — (14 government-owned and 39 private) and in 43 towing stations and yards.

This initiative was taken with regard to brawls that tend to break out between police officers and civilians whose vehicles get towed. As per sources, usually, there is a lot of friction when vehicles get towed. "On several occasions, civilians argue with the police officer on duty and say that it was legally parked even when it was clearly not. The police officers have to make videos on their phones for documentation," said Akshayraj Makwana, DCP traffic department. With introduction of cameras, officials claimed they will have proof of illegal parking or any other traffic violation that can lead to towing of vehicles.

Moreover, the department shared that CCTVs will also be installed in the towing stations and yards. They will be specifically installed in some of the biggest towing yards of Dani Limbda, near Indra Bridge, and in other small towing yards as well.

"Right now we have police officers who go and keep checking the vehicles in custody to make sure that there is no damage caused. This will unburden the personnel and also help us keep proper tabs," Makwana said.
