Parents willing to get their children admitted under the Right to Education (RTE) Act are flummoxed by the online process to fill out the admission forms. According to them, the portal has GPS issues because they are unable to select the preferred schools. Many parents claimed that schools such as Anand Niketan, DAV school, Zydus School for Excellence, etc, were not reflecting on the portal.

Sharing her experience, a single parent and a resident of Vejalpur, Shabnam Ansari (name changed) said: "Since yesterday, I have tried to fill out the forms 4-5 times, but all in vain. While I could fill out the form properly, the tab to select schools of my choice only reflected state-board schools. There are many other schools such as DAV, Zydus school, Cosmos Castle International school, etc, within 6 kilometres of my residence, but those are not in the list. She said that she also tried to change her location of my residence from Vejalpur police station to Vejalpur police chowki to see if it made a difference, but list remained the same.

"RTE admission is the only hope for my son to get good education as I am facing difficulty to raise him. I work as a cook at two houses to run my family", she said.

Interestingly, this phenomenon is not new. Even last year, choice of schools was a big problem, said Gulmoin Khokhar, convenor of Zubeida Seva Ghar that works for the cause of RTE. On day 1, the website had crashed in the afternoon and later in the evening, we found that not many schools were displayed in the list of choices for the parents," he said.

Speaking about the same, MI Joshi, Director of Primary Education said: "In the first two days, close to 86,000 applications have been filed. This year we have taken due care for location of schools, but if parents face difficulty, they can approach the forms receiving centre. We have not received any complaints so far."

This year, the state government aims to give admissions to 1.10 lakh students as against 85,000 last year. The process will continue till April 20. The education department intends to complete the first round of admissions under RTE before summer holidays begin. The first list of admissions will be declared by April 25 and the students whose names are on that list will be required to confirm their admission before May 1.
