The city required emergency services the maximum on new year day rather than Diwali, if the number of emergency related calls are anything to go by.

On an average, the city received 330 emergency calls on new year this year as against an average of 255 calls recorded in October, marking a 29.46% increase in emergencies this new year. On Diwali day, the emergencies rose to 9.06%.

From amongst emergencies, assault cases recorded the maximum percentage-wise rise at 264.71%, closely followed by fire cases at 260.47%. While in numbers, vehicular trauma incidents recorded the highest number of cases followed by assaults.

An official of the 108 emergency services said that the rise in percentage seems phenomenal as they are compared to statistics of regular days. Even when the number of such cases rises slightly, the percentage rise in them seems big, he added.

Interestingly, there was a 257% rise in cases related to diabetes and most of these were registered a day before Diwali. “The numbers may be in single digits but we have observed a similar trend across the state. One obvious reason can be the unmindful gorging of sweets irrespective of their health-condition. The cases of acute abdominal pains — another condition associated with food — have also increased,” said the official.

The good news, however, is that the state saw a slight fall in emergencies this year vis-à-vis last year. “Although there was a percentage decrease in cases, we had a very busy Diwali this year. It is also because the number of cases we handle on a normal day has gone up,” said the official.
