Four firemen sustained burns while carrying out a rescue operation in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Later, it was revealed by senior officials of the fire department that the four were not wearing any safety equipment. A source told DNA that the staff of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES) are themselves not following the safety norms while combating fire, thereby ending up getting hurt.
Twenty-seven firemen have sustained burns in Ahmedabad between February 2003 and 2019, AFES data revealed. In all the incidents, the firemen who were injured were not wearing the safety gear. It is to be noted that of those 27, seven of them were wounded this year.
"Our men are lacking in safety equipment. Many of them don't wear them and risk their lives. Despite giving them reminders, many of them ignore the basic norms. As per fire officials, whenever a fireman sustains major injuries during a call, it is always because of not wearing the safety equipment. We are not saying that our men are totally safe by wearing safety equipment, but it reduces the impact," MF Dastoor, the chief fire officer of AFES, told DNA.
"During the incident on Wednesday, four of our men sustained burns. None of them was wearing safety equipment while entering the house. It's a total carelessness. Now on, we are going to take strict action against the staff who are not wearing the safety equipment. If needed, we will suspend them, " further said Dastoor.
