City received 133 mm of showers, several underpasses shut down but were later opened during the day

As incessant rains continue to batter the city, four people of a migrant labour family died in wee hours of Saturday in Shela as under-construction boundary wall fell on them while they were asleep.

According to Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) sources, migrant labour family died in wall collapse identified as Dinesh (40), his wife Ramda (30) and their daughter and son aged three and two years respectively.

AFES sources further added that the migrant family hailed from Rajasthan and will be informing their relatives soon.

Fire Officer Rajesh Bhatt while explaining the whole incident said, "the wall collapsed around 4:30 am; a local watchman heard the sound of the wall collapsing and informed fire brigade about it."

Ahmedabad city has been experiencing incessant rains since Friday, which resulted in at least 198 complaints related to falling of trees, waterlogging, road cave-ins.

Four underpasses were closed for vehicular traffic due to flooding, which was later opened for traffic post receding of water.

Though the municipal authorities claimed to have good rainfall this year, the weather department expects predicted more showers till next Wednesday.

The city had received 133.95 mm rains in 24 hours ending 6 am in the morning on Saturday. South West Zone received maximum 219 mm rains followed by North West Zone (153.25 mm), West Zone (128.39 mm), Central Zone (124 mm), South Zone (117.5 mm), East Zone (106.84 mm) and North Zone (88.65 mm). Sarkhej received maximum 219 mm rains.

According to the AMC report the Ahmedabad received 16.41 mm rains, Vatva received maximum 23 mm rains followed by Sarkhej with 21 mm downpour till Saturday evening.

The water level in Vasna Barrage on Sabarmati river stood at 126.25 mm at 4:00 pm and was receiving 9641 cusecs of water from Narmada Main Canal of which 9010 cusecs of water have been released into the river downstream. Seven gates of the barrage were open to release water.

The civic body has received 143 complaints regarding uprooting of trees, 47 about waterlogging, five about risky structures and three about damage to the roads, a report said.
