Ahmedabad railway station soon will look more spacious with better facilities and crowd management. In a major project, ten students of Faculty of Management at CEPT university have worked on concerns expressed by the railway authorities that included parking-management, crowd-management, sewage and drainage, etc.

The students worked on the problems for four months, analysing and proposing solutions to the railway board officials. Interestingly, the suggestions and recommendations have been accepted by the railway authorities.

Speaking about the project, professor Mercy Samuel of Faculty of Management said, "As part of their first-semester project, we approached railway authorities to help them enhance passenger experience and solve their problems.

As part of the project 'managing railway stations', students looked at different aspects for example, crowd-management was a big issue for the railways. Platform number 14 being the focus as it would attract metro passengers as well as regular train passengers, students looked at dispersing the crowd in a few minutes of the arrival of a train. Students did peak hour analysis."

The students worked on crowd management strategies for avoidance of critical crowd densities, triggering rapid group movements and thereby leading to crowd disasters.

In terms of security and surveillance, the students found that while there were many CCTV cameras on the platforms, many of them had an obstruction that led to unclear images. So students have suggested different positioning of the cameras.

Another suggestion was to be firm and allow only one person to accompany the passenger. Students said, "Usually more than three people accompany one passenger which creates crowd on platforms."

The same is restricted at the airport hence we have suggested a ticket checker to implement this. People also carry more luggage than the limit so they should be made aware through posters."

With 1.8 lakh passenger footfall everyday and generating 2500 kg of waste per day, managing bulk waste had become challenging. The students have suggested to play jingles when the train arrives, communicating passengers about waste segregation. Process of segregation of waste, videos or announcement made when the trains arrive, closed bins, pedal bins have been proposed", added Samuel.

Suggestions

  • Introducing up and down signages on the staircase
  • Anti-skid mats on stairs along with grip-tape on rails of the staircase
  • Shifting of BRTS bus-stop to clear traffic woes
