Price of the much-cherished Kesar Mango will become affordable in Ahmedabad in about a fortnight, local traders said. As of now, the stock available in the markets comes from farmers in the Talala region. In about a week, the auction of Kesar mangoes will begin at the Talala market yard, after which the supply of this variety will increase. This year, the mango season is quite delayed and this fact has increased the wait for mango lovers. Also, the supply of other varieties of mangoes will also increase, therefore, moderating the prices.

H H Jharsania, secretary of Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) at Talala said that the auction of Kesar mangoes will begin on May 5. Because of unfavourable weather conditions, the production is expected to be significantly lower. He declined from estimating the supply from Talala. However, Ukabhai Ajuriya, a farmer from Talala said that production is lower by about 40 per cent as unseasonal rains and storms have prematurely hampered the fruits. "Many of the farms have nearly nil production. Some farmers may not get mangoes for their captive consumption," he said. However, Ukabhai said the variety claimed to be Kesar mango is not from traditional areas where it is grown.

Bonny Rohra, one of the leading traders in the wholesale markets of Ahmedabad said that while the auction of Kesar Mangoes is yet to begin, a section of farmers from Talala is selling directly in the wholesale market. Laxmandas Rohra, chairman of Ahmedabad Wholesale Fruit Market Association said that supplies in the wholesale fruit market of Ahmedabad are likely to increase from a little over 40 trucks now, to 70-80 trucks in about a fortnight. Retail price ranges between Rs 75 -120 per kg, depending upon the variety. "If you wait for a fortnight, price of even the premium variety will fall. It's better to wait rather than buy costlier fruits," said Laxmandas Rohra. He said that in spite of lower production, prices are unlikely to go through the roof because markets are witnessing simultaneous arrivals of different varieties of fruits. These include Badam, Sundari, Pairi, Ratnagiri Hapoos (Alphonso) and Totapuri mangoes. Moreover, the season is not only delayed but also short; so there won't be much decline in the average daily trading, he informed.
