Are you sure the popcorn and the quick bites at the movie theatres are as healthy as the enticing scripts? Not really. A recent food sample test found the butter-salted popcorn at Cinema Ventures Private Ltd. in Himalaya Mall substandard.

The food-flying squad of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) collected 11 samples from different multiplexes across the city on September 20.

Samples of popcorn, samosa, nachos, cheese and jalapeno dip, cooking oils, chilli powder catch-up, etc were collected. However, an AMC health official who did not want to be named said very rarely these days the food is adulterated.

"After constant monitoring and several sample-collection drives, the eateries these days hardly serve adulterated food. But, we have found substandard food from a multiplex," said Dr.Bhabin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of AMC.

Unsafe sample:

The food sample contains non-permitted ingredients, addictive colours and flavours. The sample also allegedly had insects in it.

Substandard? Know the extent

The food sample that does not meet the standards laid by the regulation board may not necessarily be unsafe. For example, a milk should contain minimum fat, when it doesn't have a required fat it is declared as substandard.

Misbranded

The food sample that makes false claims on its package labels or for advertisements are called misbranded. The product whose date and address of manufacture is not mentioned on its packet could be labelled misbranded.

50 cases of dengue in a week

It seems the aedes aegypti mosquitoes have gained a fresh momentum as 50 fresh dengue cases have been reported in the city in the last week. 200 cases of dengue have been reported within AMC limit till October 20. Also, 270 cases of malaria, 63 cases of falciparum and three cases of chikungunya have been reported within the time. While 233 cases of typhoid have been reported, 198 cases of jaundice and 220 cases of gastroenteritis have come out.
