While the state is ruled by BJP, its young brigade at three major universities in the state has failed to strike a chord with the college youths.

Results of recent college senate election seem to indicate that winds of change are blowing on the campus with young voters switching their loyalties to National Students Union of India (NSUI), an arm of the Congress.

The NSUI has proved its mettle by dethroning Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in two of the largest varsities of the state— Gujarat University (GU) and Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) of Baroda.

Besides this, it has continued its success story at the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) by grabbing 58 out of 71 college seats this year.

“The main reason behind NSUI’s repeated victory in Surat could be the extensive involvement of members in student-related problems,” said Gulabsinh Rajput, national general secretary of the NSUI. He, in fact, insisted that ABVP has not been able to gain majority since 2004 in VNSGU.

“We not only organise monthly programmes to educate youth, but also help solve their problems — be it admission issues, amenities, infrastructure or any other problem,” he added. Even as NSUI brags about its victory, ABVP has been claiming that they have gained majority in VNSGU by winning 59 seats.

“We can only consider this election as a learning point. This time, our focal point was women’s safety issue. We had taken girls to a huge gathering in Patna and so we got little time to campaign in the election,” said Ravi Desai, pradesh mantri of ABVP.

Desai, however, doesn’t believe that poor performance in universities could affect their reach to the young voters in upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“We may not have gained two top posts at MSU, but in faculty elections, we have won eight seats.

This shows that we have significant presence among the youngsters. Same is the case with Gujarat University and VNSGU,” he explained.
