HC had directed state to ban Chinese lanterns

The Gujarat high court had in December 2015 directed the state government to impose a ban on Chinese lanterns after a PIL was filed by Jivan Rabari. He had argued before the court that the sky lanterns, which were very popular owing to its low cost, had resulted in several fire hazards across Ahmedabad. He had also pointed out that the lanterns also pollute the environment as they are not made of biodegradable materials, adding that the wire-structure of the lantern, if swallowed, can puncture the internal organs of strays. Rabari had also contended that the use of such lanterns was no longer limited to Uttarayan, but was also used in marriage and birthday parties as well.

Chinese lanterns led to several fires

There was an incident registered in the Chandlodia area in 2015 at a motorcycle godown. The fire was brought under control after an hour, but more than 32 bikes were damaged in the fire. Another minor incident was reported near Ahmedabad airport where a lantern fell on dry grass near the Met office and resulted in a fire. It was brought under control in less than five minutes.
