At a time where most countries are trying their best to keep a check on the growing population, the Parsi community in Surat is offering sops to couples for having more babies including cash benefits.

According to community leaders around 800 to 1,000 Parsis die every year (in India and abroad), while only 250 to 300 Parsis are added to the miniscule community every year. The improper birth-death ratio results in dwindling of the population.

Thus in a bid to increase the number of Parsis in the country and promote couples to have children Parsi Panchayats have decided to provide cash assistance, bear expense of fertility clinics and other required help.

And that’s not all. Couples having two children will be given Rs3,000 per month, while those having three children will be given Rs5,000 per month by Parsi Panchayats.

Again, the panchayats will also bear educational and medical expense of the child, once he/she attains 18 years of age. Besides this, the expense of fertility clinic for a couple would also be borne by the panchayats.

Currently, Bombay Parsi Panchayat has adopted a scheme where it bears all expenses of a couple wanting to conceive. Panchayats are already helping couples by providing them accommodation at nominal rates.

“Population of Parsis is dwindling constantly. The reasons include late marriage and conceiving one or two children mostly one. Situation can change only if Parsi couples conceive more children and for this we have decided to provide them with all the necessary assistance,” said Dinshaw Mehta, chairman of Bombay Parsi Panchayat.

Parsi Panchayats also feel that new sops will encourage couples to have more babies. “This is a very good initiative planned by Bombay Parsi Panchayat and it will definitely help in attaining desired results. Couples who are not planning family due to financial problems, can now think of conceiving a child,” said Darayus Master, president of Surat Parsi Panchayat.
