Ahmedabad: Orange alert warning for today, hot days ahead

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has issued an Orange Alert for Thursday after receiving information from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), regarding a temperature forecast of 44 degree Celsius for the day in Ahmedabad.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has issued an Orange Alert for Thursday after receiving information from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), regarding a temperature forecast of 44 degree Celsius for the day in Ahmedabad.

Along with the alert, the health department has also issued an advisory following the prediction of high temperature. "We have received five days' advance forecast from the Met department. The coming three days will be hot and people are advised to avoid going out during noon hours," stated a press release of the civic body.

The civic body has made several arrangements for the citizens to quench their thirst and avoid dehydration. All health centres and BRTS, AMTS stands are equipped with ORS packets to avoid any heat exhaustion. The estate department has made sure that construction sites have sufficient cool water for their workers. Hospitals are equipped with ice packs and enough facilities to treat heat stroke patients.

"People are advised to keep drinking fluids such as water, buttermilk and other beverages. People must avoid prolonged heat exposure. And if anyone has symptoms such as skin burns, rashes, muscle pain, nausea, headache, fainting or discomfort, they must consult doctors or call 108 emergency services," said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer, AMC.

The IMD stated that on April 26, 27 and 28, the mercury will cross 45 degree Celsius in the city. For Thursday, it has forecast the maximum temperature to be around 44 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature could be around 26 degree Celsius.

Heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail for three days at isolated pockets in the districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Vadodara and in Saurashtra-Kutch namely Kutch, Rajkot, Surendranagar and Amreli.

On Wednesday, Ahmedabad recorded 41.9 degree Celsius, which was one degree above normal while the minimum temperature was recorded at 27.2 degree Celsius which was two degree above normal.

Across the state, the highest maximum temperature was recorded at Amreli which was 43.2 degree Celsius, while the lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Okha which was 20.3 degree Celsius.
