Heavy rains lashed the city and state on Sunday evening throwing life out of gear at most places. Four deaths were reported in the city alone while across the state, 11 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents. Underpasses in the city got flooded resulting in traffic diversions, chaos and slow vehicle movements.

Rains began on Sunday at around 7 pm with the city receiving 26.12 mm of average rainfall in just two hours. The west zone received the maximum rainfall at 37.5 mm followed by the north-west zone at 36.4 mm.

Three people lost their lives. In Gomtipur, 10-year-old boy Gautam Vaghela was electrocuted after he accidentally touched a light pole while playing in the water-logged area outside his home in Khadwad ni Chali. Vaghela was declared brought dead by doctors at Shardaben hospital. His friend, 7-year-old Vinay Dafad was also electrocuted but was rushed to the hospital where he is battling for life. In another incident, an auto driver and his passenger were killed near the Astodia gate when he parked his vehicle under a tree to escape the rain. The 45-year-old driver who is yet to be identified was ferrying a woman passenger when he decided to wait under a tree to escape the rain fury
.
The tree suddenly fell on the auto, killing both the driver and the woman on the spot. A man was injured after a tree fell on him near Vastral area.

Uprooted trees were reported from Bodakdev, Naroda, Bapunagar, Astodia, Gomtipur and Sabarmati. A cave-in was reported from Keshavnagar area in the west zone.

The rain led to waterlogging in several areas with traffic coming to almost a stand-still at the Iskcon underpass. The Akhbarnagar underpass was closed down after it got flooded with water leading to traffic diversions.

Further chaos ensued when amid heavy rains AMC stopped commuters from using the flyover at Helmet crossroads. This led to heavy traffic jam in the area as the area under the flyover also got water-logged.

An official of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said that the flyover was closed due to micro-surfacing work.

“But we opened it later due to the heavy traffic,” said the official. Meanwhile, the Met department has predicted more rain and thundershowers for the city on Monday as well.
