In a complete turnaround of events, and in investigation in the gangrape and murder of a 21-year-old girl in Amreli district, Bipin – her 17-year-old brother – has been found culprit in the incident. He has confessed to have strangulated his sister to death.

Bipin killed her on suspicion that she was in a relationship with Sanju Vala, a boy from another community, and then cooked up the story to create a scenario that put blame on Vala. The medical examinations have confirmed that the victim was not raped. Police have detained Bipin and have sent the case to juvenile board, as he is a minor.

“We had sent the victim’s body to Bhavnagar for post-mortem and medical examination, which confirmed she died of strangulation and wasn’t raped,” said Shobha Bhutda, SP of Amreli district. “Investigations also revealed that contrary to claims by the eye-witness, Sanju and Bablu Vala were not at the scene of crime. We then interrogated the boy, who confessed to have murdered his sister.”

Bipin, with his relative from Ingrola village and sarpanch of Nani Dhari village, had on Saturday registered a complaint of gangrape and murder of her sister. Khambha police had registered the complaint based on eye-witness account of the boy.

The boy doubted his sister of an affair with Sanju Vala. “She was talking to Sanju (on the night of the incident) which strengthened his notion. He choked her with a rope and poisoned her,” said Bhutda. “He then cooked a story about rape, loot and murder against Sanju Vala,” she added.

Police have recorded Bipin’s confession before officials of social welfare department and two other independent important men of the village. “We sent the information to the department since Bipin’s a juvenile. Action will be taken as per recommendations of the department,” said Bhutda.

The alleged gangrape had shaken up Nani Dhari village during the girl’s last rites on Sunday. The victim’s and the accused’s communities clashed over the matter – killing one and injuring ten others, in the process. The victim’s community had even demanded a state-wide protest.
