The Special Operation Group (SOG) of Crime Branch, on Monday, arrested a 30-year-old Nigerian national for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine in 20 capsules that he had swallowed.

The accused, identified as Johu Alexis, was caught at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad based on intelligence inputs and on suspicion of CIFS officers present at the airport. Alexis had arrived from Dubai and was on his way to Mumbai when he was nabbed at the Ahmedabad airport by the immigration department and later handed over to the Sardarnagar police station.

Later, he was taken to the Ahmedabad Asarwa Civil Hospital where an x-ray confirmed the presence of cocaine-filled capsules in his body. As per SOG officials, they initially came to know that around 20 capsules are in his stomach and the value of the drug can be only known once it is removed.

Harshad Patel, DCP of SOG said, "Right now, the accused is admitted to the hospital and the process of removing the drugs from the body is going on. Until now, we have been able to cover nine capsules but still, 11 are still inside. We suspect that around a total of 30 to 40 grams of cocaine must be present in the capsules which he has swallowed, but the value of the drugs can only be confirmed once it is checked and the exact weight is confirmed."

It was also revealed during the investigation that the accused was flying from Dubai to Mumbai and they suspect that the consignment was supposed to be delivered to associates in Mumbai.
