The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to install reverse vending machines to recycle plastic bottles on World Environment Day.

This announcement is in accordance with the theme of United Nations for the D-day, which is Beat the Plastic. The civic body has many other plans for the day as well.

“We are going to install reverse vending machines where people can throw their used plastic bottles. Those bottles will be then recycled. We are aiming to recycle maximum waste that has been generated in the city,” said a senior AMC official.

“We are planning several awareness campaigns to reduce the use of plastic — to make people aware of disposal of plastic bags, wrappers and cups. More often than not, such plastic clog the catch pits, resulting in water logging during monsoon,” added the official.

AMC’s Green Diary

Last year, the AMC had launched green calendar — a series of events for the year — which did not see the desired action.
This year again, a Green Diary is being planned, which will be launched by mayor Gautam Shah on Tuesday.
