The state government had directed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to install CCTV cameras near Kharicut canal last year to keep a check on littering and other mischiefs. However, in the face of several questions raised in the last few standing committee meetings regarding the number of cameras installed, a group formed by standing committee members will visit the canal to conduct a survey.

"When the massive task of cleaning the Kharicut canal was undertaken by the civic body, the team had installed a few CCTV cameras to prevent littering and other mischiefs. Now, committee members are enquiring about the number of cameras installed near the canal," said Amul Bhatt, standing committee chairperson, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

"To cross-check, we're going to send a team to Kharicut canal next week," added Bhatt. According to AMC officials, more than 40 cameras have been installed near the canal.

In another move, the standing committee has stalled the work of cleaning and desilting of lakes which was approved by the health and solid waste committee. The committee has approved work of Rs 1.80 crore to clean 38 lakes.

The work was proposed by the executive wing of the civic body. Bhatt said that the standing committee will carry out an inspection of the lakes before starting the cleaning and desilting work.

"The sites will be inspected. The work will take some time for approval," said Bhatt.
